The Best Outdoor Layering Top for Women

I believe in looking good while you rip. And no, I don’t want a “shrink it and pink it” piece of clothing. Outdoor gear should be both functional and flattering. I don’t want to look like I’ve just spent hours on the trail or days camping outside. I like gear that transitions from the bike to the brewery or from the ski slopes to school pickup (I like to downplay my outdoor adventures while teachers, who are the best, have patiently been watching my child). With a closet full of clothes, one of the pieces I reach for most is a technical flannel shirt.

Moisture wicking and lightweight, this layering piece is usually a little longer for a more flattering fit with leggings and a casual-cool look while on the trail. It’s my go-to piece for most outdoor activities, from hiking to biking to skinning, as well as camping and traveling. Here’s why I love a technical flannel shirt and a few of my favs.

History of Flannel

The flannel originated in Wales in the 17th century as a replacement for their drab wool garb and as a response to the cold and wet weather. The trend caught on throughout Europe due to the flannel’s durability, warmth, affordability, and softness. Since then, flannels have become synonymous with outdoor wear. In the 1990’s, the plaid shirt became popular in mainstream culture.

In more recent years, technology has evolved to offer lightweight and technical fabrics. This fan favorite piece for outdoor enthusiasts became available to wear for every activity.

Technically, a true flannel is based on a wool material that was part of its origin roots in Europe. Plaid is the design of the fabric. In today’s culture, the words are pretty intertwined.

Technical Flannel Shirts for Outdoor Activities

So, what is a technical flannel shirt (aka plaid shirt)? A button down, long sleeve layering top made with a moisture wicking, quick drying material, with just the right amount of stretch. Chilly days in the mountains call for a shirt that is slightly heavier, blocks the wind, and has a longer cut for full coverage. Additionally, some shirts have added features such as built-in zipper pockets or mesh panels.

A button up, long sleeve technical flannel shirt is my preferred piece when I want a long sleeve layering top for outdoor activities. From hiking to mountain biking, rafting, or traveling, I prefer a looser and more forgiving fit of a flannel than a fitted long sleeve shirt.

The biggest appeal, other than quick dry, stretchy material and additional features, is that a technical flannel shirt just looks cool and relaxed from the trail to wherever you’re heading next. Like, you’re ready for any adventure but not trying too hard. Either way, I’m a fan.

When I was pregnant, I loved having button up shirts as layering pieces. I found myself always wearing my technical flannel when I was out hiking and just throwing it on over my bump. It meant less investment in maternity specific hiking clothes.

This piece serves double duty; there’s no need to change your clothes post ride or hike since you’re already dressed to go out. Technical clothing that doubles as lifestyle clothing has been a rising trend in the last few years. From the trail to running errands, apres beers, or picking up the kids, it’s easier to have clothes that transition to multiple aspects of your life. Also, with small children, clothing that is stretchy and quick drying yet still looks good is a must.
